Estate Planning

Trusts
A fiduciary relationship with respect to property, in which one person (trustee) holds property for the benefit of another person (beneficiary) with specific duties attaching to the way the trustee deals with the property.
Wills
An instrument or declaration by which one directs the disposition of one's property after death. A document that attempts to distribute an estate.
Power of Attorney
A written document where one person (principal) appoints another (attorney-in-fact/agent) to handle some or all of one's property and financial affairs. Ends at the principal's death or incapacity.
Advance Directive
A statement of intent usually regarding life-sustaining treatment in the event of terminal illness or permanent incapacity; it is just a directive, without appointing a person as agent to make the decision when the time comes.
